What is creative?
The things we think of as creative often times aren’t.
As a society, we associate the word “creative” with the visual. With music. Art. Pretty or cute. With wild hair and wilder ideas. We view “creative” as this mystical, uncontrollable substance that magically decides to infuse a team.
It isn’t any of that.
Creative is a process. A methodology. A structure of thinking. Creative is fitting pieces of an abstraction together to create something, whether that something is a logo, an experience, a product, or an organization.
The opposite of creative isn’t analytical, nor is it destructive. The opposite of creative is plodding, unquestioning. Insipid. Vacuous.
And there is great fun to be had blowing up bridges.
What is consulting?
Fundamentally, consultants give advice. It’s heavily researched, thoughtful, measured advice, but it’s still just advice.
Imagine flipping a coin and betting on the outcome. 50/50 odds. Without more information, you will always only break even. But if those odds move to 80/20, suddenly you are guaranteed success over time.
Good consulting aims to move those odds in your favor through research, process, and experience.
All the models and empathy interviews and user stories and guided research are simply tools that a consultancy uses to move the needle as consistently as possible in the right direction. They are a toolset and approach to good decision making.
When you add the “creative” part to the equation, you are left with a studied, informed, intentional approach to solving problems coupled with usable, meaningful, tangible assets, plans, and strategies to execute on those decisions.
